Kitty is a 24 year old singer songwriter and musician from Greenwich. We met up in The Ivy House, a pub in Nunhead which Kitty has been going to since she was a teenager. The Ivy House often hosts gigs and have had some incredible bands and artists perform on their stage! Aswell as being a musician Kitty is also a sound engineer.
Music has always been a huge part of her upbringing as her Dad worked for music magazines, as a child she was always in the press tents at festivals hanging out with all kinds of people in the industry.
Kitty is one of five siblings and growing up they all made music together. Her brother is now a tech house DJ and her younger sister is now attending music school! Kitty started learning music from a young age, she began with the recorder and flute and attended a very creative secondary school in kidbrook. In year 9 she left and attended brit school to study theatre, although she soon realised that music was her real passion and changed strands in 6th form.
Kitty’s musical abilities are impressive to say the least, she can play 4 instruments (Bass, guitar, flute and piano) and is teaching herself to play the drums! Her musical style has developed over the years as she has been sidetracked in the past by believing her music needs to be difficult in order to be impressive and show off her skills. She then thought about the music that she likes (‘new order, 80’s pop stuff’) and realised that music doesn’t need to be complex to sound good. when listing who has influenced her she mentioned The Japanese House, Caroline Polachek, Charli XCX, Muna, Christian Lee Hutson, Belle and Sebastian and lots more. Kitty would describe her own musical style as ‘Alternative cinematic ethereal pop!’
She began songwriting at about the age of 17, but it wasn’t until she was 19 that she felt she’d written her first proper song. Her first performance was at a poetry book launch for a friend who had inspired one of her songs, She enjoyed the performance so much that she hasn’t looked back since. ‘Saving Face’ which was released in 2020 was Kitty’s first song with a music video, the idea to use a puppet came to her almost as soon as she started brainstorming for the video. Her friend Ewan who directed the video used to create short films with puppets and the absurdity of having a love interest which is a fox puppet seemed like a perfect fit! She doesn’t want to take herself to seriously so a fun slightly comical music video fits perfectly with what she wants to portray. ‘Saving face’ is the song that Kitty is most proud of and I can see why!
Kitty is a member of the band ‘Prima Queen’ who got in touch with her after she dropped out of uni and pledged to herself that she would work as hard on music and doing gigs as she would on uni work. They were looking for a new bass player and her friend recommended her! She went to meet them in a Goldsmiths practice room where they showed her all their music, She absolutely loved it and has been a part of the band ever since. They are constantly on tour and gigging in London. She sometimes finds it overwhelming juggling the band and her solo music at the same time but she wouldn’t change any of it!
She has recently played with Prima queen at Glastonbury festival and as the supporting band for Olivia Dean at Somerset house. She is constantly busy and has a calendar full of exciting things coming up soon!
