Spotlight artist of the week and new songs added to playlist!!

By Marisse Cato

Hi everyone, I’m back again this week with a switch-up in genre for our artist of the week! I would like to introduce you to/remind you of singer-songwriter Misty Miller from South London. I remember listening to her music as a teenager and I’m excited to share with you since how her music has evolved. And more broadly, I urge us as listeners to give all artists the time and grace to change and develop their craft – embracing the complexity and flexibility of human creativity.

Misty’s early and most recent work is very much wandering-through-the-woodland type folky sounds. We hear this crafted for the film “Catherine Called Birdy” 2023. I knew her first and foremost however, from her grungier, plugged-in mid-2010s sound.

For the pop-punk lovers and curious listeners, I want to take you back to 2016 Misty Miller tracks “Taxi Cab” and “Best Friend”. Both showcase the versatility of an intimate and powerful voice with the backing of an energising garage-style band. Its angsty, it’s honest and it’s fun – definitely something you can move to.

Since becoming independent, Misty has released a stream of music since 2019. This un- plugged sound has a real sensibility of connection and the divine feminine, backed by her artwork for “River Songs” 2020. In “Please”, Misty’s voice is at once in the room with you and echoing over from some faraway place. Off her 2022 EP “This Old Heart of Mine”, you can hear how she is using the gentler parts of her voice that create a real sense of truth and vulnerability to her work, especially in tracks “Me” and “Buddha”.

I hope these few tracks highlight the evolving music of Misty and I invite you to keep up to date with her. Check out her Bandcamp and if you’re BESOTTED with her sound – consider going to a gig she is performing in at Windmill Brixton in December. All details are on @mistymillermusic on Instagram.

Enjoy Misty Miller along with some other tracks from artists new and old on the Weekly
Picks Playlist on Spotify!
Lots of love – until next time <3
