What we’re listening to this week!

19/06/2023- By Giselle Francis and Jess woodward

This weeks playlist are songs that we love from a few women we think represent the south London sound . Jazz, rap and insane vocals are just some of the things you will find here !

you can find our playlist on our Spotify which will be added to weekly 🙂

Little Simz

Little Simz from Islington, North London never fails to capture the sound of the whole London community. Her Jazz, Rap and celebration of female blackness has made waves across the city since the release of 101FM, which quickly became popular. She has recently released an album named ‘No thank you’ and has a uk tour planned for 2023 and 2024. My top tracks are ‘Point and kill’, ‘Two worlds apart’, and ‘No merci’. We look forward to what she has in store for us in the future!

Pink Pantheress

PinkPantheress despite not being from London has had no problems excelling in this oversaturated city bringing a new sound to the table by revamping the jungle classics and making them her own. With Angel her newest release being featured and written for Greta Gerwigs block buster movie barbie. once again PinkPantheress has made a song that we can’t help but dance to.
My top tracks for PinkPantheress are ‘Angel’ , ‘Do you miss me’ and ‘Passion.’

Sasha Keable

Sasha Keable is a singer songwriter who oozes South London soul. Also
celebrating her Columbian heritage, Sasha Keable has a distinctive and authentic voice using R&B/soul to capture the essence of South London. Collaborating with huge artists such as Disclosure and Jorja Smith, she brings powerful vocals to the table, inspired by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Lauryn Hill. In 2021 I was lucky enough to catch her the at the festival Cross the Tracks in staple South London park, Brockwell. Having seen her perform live a few times as well as enjoying her music for years, I cannot recommend her enough to sit back relax and get soulful. My top picks are ‘Thats the shit’, ‘Mr always impatient’ and ‘Under your skin’. She also does an incredible cover of ‘Just friends’

Joy Crookes

A proud South Londoner of Bangladesh and Irish heritage, Joy Crookes is a
singer songwriter who has taken the world by storm. She has been nominated for the Brits Rising Star award as well as placing fourth on the BBC Sound Poll, and in the last three years has gone on to sell out tours and release her most recent album ‘Skin’ which landed at number 5 in the UK official charts. She has an abundance of talent and represents beautifully the soul and rugged beauty of South London in her music. Powerful and moving, her vocals, full of reference to South East, have been heard worldwide but you can still catch her in Nunhead if you’re lucky! My top picks are ‘No hands’, ‘London mine’, and ‘Mother may I sleep with danger’
