We met up with Evie, a sound artist and DJ from brixton. Evie says that her parents were a key inspiration for her work and journey. She grew up in a household filled with art and music which not only influenced but supported her creativity which can be seen in her DIY, get-the-ball-rolling attitude. Apart from her musical interests she also relates to feminine spirituality enjoying practices like tarot cards. This created her desire to bring her two passions of spirituality and music together.
Her upbringing was only the beginning of her love of music which continued when she found community in the rave and free party scene. Evie describes her personal connection to these crowds and DJs as being in a world outside of everyday society, where shared experiences and sounds create tribes of people. After moving to Streatham and going to Dunraven school she did her art foundation before going to Goldsmiths. Evies graduate show showcases her experiment with sound. By ripping up floorboards and stripping speakers down to their bare parts Evie built a sound system using electromagnets to create different sounds when pendulums are held over each speaker; honestly, it might be one of the craziest art pieces I’ve seen this year.
Evie is currently working with Saph on Hardcore Hangin @harcorehangin, an event that has recently swept south London and you can expect to be regularly packed! Here you can listen to Evie mixing her favourite genres acid and jungle amongst many other female DJs. She talks about the importance of representation and horizontally acting safety figures at these events. Envisioning a space where everyone feels comfortable and music is heard from many different voices in the community. She believes that female musicians have a specific role in creating community and that women have a unique ability able to read and express spiritual voices. This is powerful in bringing people together through music which is ultimately what the best parties are about.
In the future, we can expect to see a lot of exciting things from Evie. This summer she will be continuing to build gallery spaces and collaborating on Hardcore Hangin events. She is doing a Radio Thamesmead residency called RTM.FM, and will soon be heading off to Hamburg where she will be doing a six month residency at the hamburg art school (HFBK). We wish Evie the best of luck in Germany and cannot wait to see and hear what she does next!
